Andrew Hamilton
Born in 1966, photographer
Andrew Hamilton has been a working professional photographer for 20 years. As
the son of an RAF officer, he spent much of his boyhood living on various bases
in the UK and abroad.
Andrew studied Chemistry
initially at the University of Manchester (1984-1987) before commencing a Phd in
Organic Chemisty at the University of Oxford. He soon switched his attention to
photography and his professional client base now covers a swathe of design
companies, banks, law firms and production companies.
Living in open countryside for
much of his youth brought him a love of space and light. London, so often
crowded and busy, is tranquil and magical if the time and place is right. Recent
photographs of the city have concentrated on the River Thames, its bridges and
the City skyline.
Andrew prefers to photograph
at dawn and dusk. Long exposures render the mixed light at these times in a
magnified way, creating ‘invisible’ photographs of the capital that cannot
be seen by the naked eye. Use of a large format camera and conventional colour
film and printing techniques produce photographs of extreme detail and wonderful
smooth tones and colours.
Andrew sees the city as a
constantly changing canvas, an imprint of Man’s endeavour on the ancient
reaches of the Lower Thames. This ‘canvas’ will continue to develop as new
buildings and new technologies change and shape the city’s future. What
distills from these photographic studies is a city of great beauty and
depth.
Future projects on Scotland’s
Glen Coe, Kent’s White Cliffs and a certain river meadow in Oxford are planned
! Please do send an e-mail if
you would like to be informed of future exhibitions.
Many thanks, Andrew Hamilton.
